Thônes Via Ferrata

The Thônes via ferrata, also called Roche à l'Agathe, is a major equipped route that directly overlooks the center of Thônes. With its 600 meters of cable and a 235-meter elevation gain, this alpine route offers a vertical and athletic experience that attracts experienced climbers seeking thrills.

The route begins with an airy monkey bridge that immediately sets the tone, followed by steep and technical sections alternating metal rungs and natural holds on limestone rock. The highlight of the route is the Hermit's Overhang, a passage rated ED (extremely difficult) that severely tests arms and mental strength — an inverted ladder allows bypassing this difficulty. Two escape routes mark the route to allow exiting before the greatest difficulties.

Located at low altitude (start at 660 m, arrival at 895 m), the Thônes via ferrata differs from the alpine routes of La Clusaz or Grand-Bornand by its year-round accessibility (except when snow-covered) and its proximity to the village — the whole town can watch the climbers! The south-west exposure guarantees generous sunshine from 10 a.m. in summer, but can make the rock scorching in the afternoon. Access is free, but specialized equipment (harness, double energy-absorbing lanyard, helmet) is essential, as well as good physical condition and no fear of heights. For the less experienced, guidance by a mountain guide is highly recommended.
