The Château de Thorens is a historic castle located in Fillière (formerly Thorens-Glières), in the Haute-Savoie department. Built in 1060 on the orders of Count Gérold of Geneva, this medieval fortress has been inhabited by the de Sales family since 1559. Today, it operates as a 4-star hotel and reception venue, managed by the de Roussy de Sales family.
The castle preserves architectural elements from the Middle Ages (keep, towers from the 12th and 13th centuries), the Baroque period, and the 19th century. It was the residence of Saint Francis of Sales (1567–1622), Prince-Bishop of Geneva, and the country retreat of Count Camille Benso di Cavour (1810–1861), Prime Minister of Piedmont and architect of Italian unity. The castle houses numerous mementos, artworks, and objects that belonged to these two major historical figures.
Since 2020, Château de Thorens no longer offers public guided tours. It welcomes only hotel guests, as well as clients for weddings, seminars, and private events. The site has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1990.
