What is Savoyard Pottery Museum

The Musée de la Poterie Savoyarde is tucked away at Évires, a hamlet of the new commune of Fillière, on the Bornes Plateau. The museum is housed under the vast timber frame of an 1842 farmhouse, a heritage building typical of the region. It was founded in 1981 by Jean-Christophe Hermann, whose family has worked clay in Haute-Savoie for several generations at the nearby Poterie d'Évires.

The collection holds more than 2,000 pieces representing every type of pottery used in Savoy, from the 12th century to the 1930s. Cookware (toupins, pots, gratin dishes), preservation vessels (jars for fat, butter, honey), decorative ceramics, popular faience, baking dishes. The museum also displays hundreds of potter's tools and plaster or clay moulds from the 18th and 19th centuries, a rare record of artisanal technique.

The visit is guided and individual only, by appointment, which makes it a personal and high-quality experience. The museum is open from Easter to All Saints. Contact: +33 (0)4 50 62 01 90. It is one of Europe's most complete sites for Savoyard ceramics, ideally combined with a visit to the contemporary Poterie d'Évires (Hermann family workshop), which still produces work in the same tradition today.
