What is Site de Morette — Museum of the Resistance and Memorial of the Deportation

The Morette site lies at the entrance to the valley that climbs towards the Glières plateau, in the commune of La Balme-de-Thuy. It brings together three places of remembrance of the Second World War in Haute-Savoie. The Glières national necropolis gathers 105 graves, most of them those of Resistance fighters (maquisards) of the Glières plateau, where a maquis was crushed in early 1944.

Alongside, a departmental museum of the Resistance, set up in 1964 by survivors of Glières in an 18th-century chalet, retraces the history of the maquis and the liberation of the department through objects and archives. A memorial of the deportation, created in 1965, is dedicated to the more than 1,200 Haut-Savoyards deported to the Nazi camps. The visit leads from the open-air cemetery to the rooms of the museum and the memorial.

By car

From Annecy (~20 km): head towards Thônes on the D909; the Morette site is signposted at the entrance to the valley, before Thônes. Parking on site.

When to visit

The museum and memorial are open from 4 April to 1 November; the open-air necropolis can be visited all year round. Many visitors combine Morette with the nearby Glières plateau.
