What is Animated Film Museum

The Animated Film Museum is Annecy's new museum dedicated to the art of animation, opening to the public on 19 June 2026 at the heart of the Cité internationale du cinéma d'animation, in the rehabilitated buildings of the Haras d'Annecy (listed Historic Monument, 2007). The opening is timed two days before the 50th Annecy International Animation Film Festival (21-27 June 2026).

Operated by CITIA (which also runs the Festival and the MIFA market), the museum draws on the scientific curatorship of the Musée-Château d'Annecy, holder of the 'Musées de France' collection of more than 8,000 works (including the Émile Cohl room). The 450 sqm permanent exhibition traces the history and techniques of animated film, from the pioneers to today's studios.

The museum also features a 650 sqm annual exhibition in the former riding hall (first edition 'Ankama, 25 years of creations', 19 June 2026-31 January 2027), a 160 sqm gallery for temporary shows ('Wildwood, LAIKA', 21 June-27 September 2026), a 332-seat cinema owned by the Haute-Savoie department, and the Grenier à Images education space. Architecture by Devaux & Devaux (DDA), scenography by Scénorama.
