Bureau de la Montagne du Salève — Caving

The Bureau de la Montagne du Salève offers caving taster trips into the caves and shafts of the Salève massif, just south-west of Geneva. Led by state-qualified mountain leaders, these outings reveal a little-known underground world: limestone galleries, formations, underground rivers and discreet cave fauna. All equipment is provided (coveralls, helmet with light, harness, sometimes boots), and each trip is tailored to the group — families, teens, adults — and the difficulty of the cave visited.

Who is it for? The activity is suited to families with children (from around 8-10 depending on the cave), groups of friends, stag/hen parties, school groups or corporate team-building. No prior experience is needed for discovery outings. Trips run 2 to 4 hours including the approach walk, safety briefing, underground progression (crawling, easy down-climbs, sometimes short rope pitches) and return. For seasoned cavers, the bureau also offers introductions to vertical caving on rope.

Booking and access. Bookings are made directly with the Bureau de la Montagne by phone or via their website. Outings run mainly from April to November — water levels determine which caves are accessible. Prices are around €40-60 per person for a half day, with group discounts. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty under the suit, closed shoes, and bring water and a snack. Meeting points are usually in the Salève area (Cruseilles, Présilly or La Croisette).
