What is Tour de Bellecombe

The Tour de Bellecombe at Reignier-Ésery (74930) is one of the most impressive medieval remnants of the Savoyard Genevois. A square 12th-13th-century keep, it is the last surviving element of a now-vanished medieval castle - only the imposing keep withstood destruction and the passage of time.

The castle had a remarkable historical function: it controlled a toll on the Arve river, where merchants crossing between the Duchy of Savoy and the Republic of Geneva had to pay a duty levied from the fortress. That financial role justified the construction of such a powerful tower, today 25 m high (originally around 30 m) and clearly visible from a great distance.

Free access all year, no ticketing. A 5-minute footpath leads from the free car park to the foot of the keep. The site is unguarded, with no interior visit (the tower is closed to the public) but a remarkable exterior viewpoint over the Arve valley. Dogs on leads tolerated; not wheelchair-accessible (uneven path).
