What is Vuache Castle Boundary Stone
The Vuache Castle boundary stone is a commemorative stone dated 1579, sealed at the foot of the steps near the church of Vulbens (74520). Discreet but history-rich, it is today the only tangible remnant of the seigneurial castle of Vuache, which once overlooked the village from a rise about fifteen metres above the current church.
The castle, built in the early 14th century when the region belonged to the County of Geneva, played a triple role: military fortress, temporary residence of the lords of Vuache, and administrative centre of the mandement (seigneurial territory). It was progressively abandoned in the mid-17th century, when the seigneury's seat was moved to the nearby hamlet of Faramaz. The stones were reused in village constructions and the castle quickly vanished from the landscape.
