The Cascade de Bérard via ferrata, at the hamlet of Le Buet in the Vallon de Bérard nature reserve, a playful route of bridges and walkways above the torrent and waterfall.
The Cascade de Bérard via ferrata, opened in July 2023 by Vallorcine commune and technically managed by La Chamoniarde (mountain prevention and rescue society), is a fun and accessible equipped route in the Vallon de Bérard, within the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve. Unlike more technical sites in Haute-Savoie, this via stands out for its family-friendly and refreshing character, ideal for a first roped experience.
The 400-metre route meanders on both sides of the Bérard torrent, at around 1,400 m altitude. It combines a series of Tibetan bridges, wooden walkways, beams and monkey bridges, interspersed with climbs on rungs and traverses on handrails. You move close to the waterfall in a cool, leafy atmosphere. Graded AD+, the route presents no major physical difficulty: the main challenge lies in managing exposure and aerial passages. An initial wall may demand mental strength from beginners, but the rest of the route remains accessible. An escape route is laid out after the wooden footbridge on the right bank.
On arrival, the Buvette de la Cascade de Bérard welcomes visitors for a drink or meal on the terrace facing the torrent. The site also houses the Grotte à Farinet, refuge of the famous Swiss counterfeiter Joseph-Samuel Farinet, which can be visited free of charge. Specific equipment (harness, double energy-absorbing lanyard, helmet) is essential; supervision by a high-mountain guide is strongly recommended for less experienced climbers. Equipment rental is available in Vallorcine or Chamonix.
