What is Maison de Barberine

The Maison de Barberine is a Vallorcine museum housed in a traditional alpine home built in 1705 by Nicolas Ancey, shown on the 1730 Sardinian survey map and listed Monument Historique on 5 January 2023. Located in the hamlet of Barberine at Vallorcine, about 5 km from the Swiss border, it is a remarkable surviving example of pre-modern alpine housing, with its dwelling, stable and barn under one roof.

It has been run since 1987 by the Maison de Barberine Association — Musée de Vallorcine, a non-profit founded by sixteen volunteers led by Bernard and Michel Ancey, descendants of the Ancey 'des Colas' family. The museum is part of the CCVCMB Museum Pass network at €25/year, valid across six valley sites. The official framing is traditional 18th-century Vallorcine architecture and valley ethnography, not a Walser identity.

Closed at present, the museum reopens for the summer season from 1 July to 31 August 2026: Monday–Friday 2.30 pm–5.30 pm, Sunday 3 pm–5.30 pm, closed Saturday. Adult €5, reduced €3.50, free under 18. 2026 highlight: relocation of the adjacent 'regât du Crôt' (raccard) after a 2025 3D scan.
