What is Maison de la Mémoire Janny Couttet

The Maison de la Mémoire et du Patrimoine Janny Couttet is the heritage centre of Chamonix, at 90 rue des Moulins. It occupies the former Sisters' House (or Maison Baud), built in 1828 and almost entirely rebuilt after the tragic rue des Moulins fire in 2006 (only the granite outer walls survived). Acquired by the commune in 2002, opened as the Maison de la Mémoire on 1 March 2011 and later renamed 'Janny Couttet' in tribute to the Chamonix mountain guide.

Run by the Communauté de Communes de la Vallée de Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (CCVCMB), part of the same network as the future Musée du Mont-Blanc and the Espace Tairraz, it acts as a documentary resource centre open to researchers and showcases the photographic, oral and sound archives collected by the town's Mémoires service on Chamonix history and culture.

Closed between exhibitions from 9 March to 30 June 2026. Reopens in summer 2026 with the temporary exhibition 'Chamonix 1924: inventing the Winter Olympics', marking the centenary of the first Winter Games and running until November 2026. Fares: adult €5, reduced €4, free under 18. CCVCMB Museum Pass at €25/year covers six valley sites.

From the A40 motorway, Chamonix Sud or Nord exit, follow 'Centre-Ville' then 'Rue des Moulins'. Park at the Mont-Blanc or Saint-Michel car park (paid), then 5 min on foot. Partly pedestrianised area around the rue des Moulins.

Outside the closure, usual hours are Thursday-Sunday 2pm-6pm outside school holidays (a quiet early-afternoon visit is recommended), and Tuesday-Sunday 10am-1pm and 2pm-6pm in July-August (peak summer season).
