The museum occupies the historic Chamonix Palace (1913-1914), the first of the three Belle Époque palaces of Chamonix, at 89 avenue Michel Croz.
Managed by the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc Valley Community of Communes (CCVCMB) since 2010 and a 'Musée de France' since 2003, the museum holds 17,000 catalogued items across 1,800 sqm of exhibition space, making it the largest mountain-themed museum in France. The new scenography is built around three axes: Adaptations, Exploit and Décrire.
