Abondance Abbey was founded in 1108 by Augustinian canons from Saint-Maurice Abbey in the Valais. Its buildings rose in the 13th and 14th centuries at the heart of the Abondance valley, at 934 m. The Feuillants, reformed Cistercians, replaced the canons in 1606–1607, before the abbey was suppressed in 1761. The ensemble has been a listed Historic Monument since 1875.
Its treasure is the medieval cloister and its cycle of 15th-century wall paintings devoted to the life of the Virgin — a set of exceptional finesse, preserved in place for over five centuries. The neighbouring abbey church surprises with its 19th-century trompe-l'œil décor, and the former monastery houses the permanent exhibition “From History to Art: sacred heritage in the Abondance valley”, nine centuries of liturgical objects and sacred art. Digital guides (FR–EN–DE–IT) and family trails accompany the visit.
