What is Shoemaking Museum
The Shoemaking Museum of Alby-sur-Chéran is a small craft museum in the heart of the medieval village, at 9 place du Trophée, under the historic arcades where the village cobblers once worked. Created in 1980, it moved into the medieval village in 1999, unveiling the artisan past that shaped the village identity for centuries.
In the 19th c. Alby-sur-Chéran was a major leather centre in Savoy: about 300 cobblers in 1880 made the famous "Savoyard shoes" under the Trophée arcades. The museum reconstructs workshops, tools, and the whole local cobbler economy. Free entry; open in summer (June-August).
