France's highest rack railway climbs from Saint-Gervais to the Nid d'Aigle (2,412 m) in summer, threading through forests, alpine pastures and a breathtaking Mont Blanc panorama.

The Mont Blanc Tramway (TMB) is France's highest rack railway. Founded in 1913, the 12.4 km line runs from Le Fayet (580 m) and Saint-Gervais (792 m) to the Nid d'Aigle (2,412 m) in summer, a 1 h 15 journey through conifers, alpine pastures and mountain streams. Four new railcars — Anne, Marie, Jeanne and Marguerite — have been in service since 2022–2023.
In winter, the TMB serves the Bellevue Plateau (1,800 m) and the Les Houches–Saint-Gervais ski area. In summer it delivers hikers and mountaineers to the foot of the Bionnassay glacier and the Nid d'Aigle refuge — the classic starting point for the ascent of Mont Blanc via the Voie Royale. Around 75% of Mont Blanc climbers use the TMB.
From Sallanches or Chamonix, head to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains. Le Fayet station is on the D902 main road with free parking. Saint-Gervais station (792 m) is in the village. From Geneva via A40 toward Chamonix, exit Saint-Gervais–Le Fayet (~55 min).
