What is Viuz-Faverges Archaeology Museum
The Musée Archéologique de Viuz-Faverges is an independent site museum at 855 route de Viuz in Faverges-Seythenex, next to the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Viuz. Run since its foundation in May 1972 by the Association des Amis de Viuz-Faverges (the local history and archaeology society), it is a long-standing association-run museum with serious collections from local excavations.
It tells the story of Casuaria, the Gallo-Roman vicus of about 25 hectares and 2,500 inhabitants, comparable in size to ancient Annecy. The three rooms are dominated by the Gallo-Roman period, drawn from excavations of the sanctuary, the vicus and the Thovey villa. Highlight pieces: the flat copper axe of Englannaz (2300–2200 BC), a 189-bead amber necklace (450–400 BC), a red-clay anthropomorphic statuette (1st–2nd c. AD), a 3rd-century bronze cauldron, and votive offerings from the Gallo-Roman fana (over 6,500 m² excavated in 1980).
The adjacent church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Viuz is part of the visit, with its archaeological crypt: 1st-century Roman building, 6th-, 8th–9th- and c. 1000 churches, 12th-century Romanesque chancel and 1696 baroque stalls. Fares: adult €4, child 5–14 €2.50, free under 5. The '3 sites, 3 stories' pass at €7 covers the museum plus the Butterfly and Insect Museum and the Lords of Faverges Donjon.
