Become a partnerIn an old Savoyard farmhouse from 1783 at La Chapelle-d'Abondance, the Old Ski Museum brings back the history of skiing in the Portes du Soleil from 1900 onwards: wooden skis, sealskins, sleds and snowshoes — plus the reconstructed interior of an alpine farm.

The Musée du ski ancien at La Chapelle-d'Abondance is a private museum set in a vintage Savoyard farmhouse from 1783 rich with history. The building itself is part of the visit: visitors discover the reconstructed interior of an alpine farmhouse, from the stable to the kitchen, where many everyday objects of peasant life in the Abondance Valley are on show.
The centrepiece is a collection of skis retracing the history of skiing from 1900 onwards, the era of alpine skiing pioneers in the Chablais. You can follow the evolution of gear and technique: leather bindings, solid wood skis, the first profiled boards, sealskins for climbing, traditional sleds and gut-laced snowshoes. Every piece of kit was redesigned to go faster and more safely, and the museum shows that progression in a vivid, moving way.
The museum is open year-round, on demand, which makes for a tailor-made experience. Reservation by SMS is required, specifying "Musée du Ski" to +33 (0)7 62 21 88 68, at most 2 days before the visit. Single fee €4. Ideal as a side trip during a ski or hiking stay at La Chapelle-d'Abondance, a family resort of the Portes du Soleil domain, or as a rainy-day backup.
