What is Maison du Lieutenant

The Maison du Lieutenant is a free interpretation centre at 2231 route du Mont, hameau du Mont in Servoz. The building is the oldest house in the Chamonix valley and is run by the Communauté de Communes de la Vallée de Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (CCVCMB), in the same network as the future Musée du Mont-Blanc and the Espace Tairraz.

Contrary to some descriptions, the Maison du Lieutenant does not cover geology or mountain rescue. Its permanent exhibition is titled 'Mountain Agriculture, Heart of the Territory' and explores alpine agropastoralism — the link between yesterday's mountain culture, today's profession and tomorrow's challenges for mountain farmers. A large animated 3D model of the territory is the centrepiece, alongside edutainment modules, multimedia displays and a collection of historic objects.

The 2025–2026 temporary exhibition 'Inspirations végétales — when nature feeds creation', by artist-designer Fanny Crochard, explores ethnobotany. Free entry to all exhibitions; paid workshops by booking. The CCVCMB Museum Pass at €25/year is on sale at the network's paying sites.
