The Saix de Miolène via ferrata, in La Chapelle-d'Abondance, is one of the longest and most exposed in Haute-Savoie. With 900 m of cable and 220 m of elevation gain, it unfolds in three sections – Le Cabri (AD+), Le Chamois (TD) and Le Bouquetin (TD) – which can be linked or interrupted thanks to three escape routes. The south-facing wall overlooks Abondance Valley: smooth slabs, overhanging traverses, short overhangs and long vertical sections punctuate a physically demanding and spectacularly exposed itinerary.
The Saix de Miolène ("the middle-of-the-valley rock") is a free-access equipped route, but a guide is strongly recommended for less experienced ferratists. The route ranks among the area's classics and attracts fans of airy thrills seeking a sporty challenge in a remarkable alpine setting. Note: the wall is frequented by the peregrine falcon, a protected species; sections 2 and 3 may be temporarily closed from 15 March to 10 July for nesting.
From Thonon-les-Bains, take the D902 towards Châtel/Morzine. At the Bioge tunnel, follow the D22 towards Châtel. At the entrance to La Chapelle-d'Abondance, parking on the left at the foot of the quarry (via ferrata sign).

Access is free, but a mountain guide is strongly recommended if you are not self-sufficient and experienced. The Bureau des Guides de la Vallée d'Abondance offers supervised outings (€50/person beginners, €60/person advanced).
