Where to swim and stroll by the water in Haute-Savoie — from Lac d'Annecy to Léman, not forgetting the mountain lakes.
Haute-Savoie has two great lakes — Annecy and Léman — lined with public beaches, plus a host of high-altitude lakes. Plenty of spots to lay down a towel, take a dip, or simply walk along the shore.
Lac d'Annecy, reputed to be among the purest lakes in Europe, lines up grassy beaches that are supervised in summer — Saint-Jorioz, Albigny, the Marquisats, Duingt, Menthon-Saint-Bernard. Most are free; a few, such as the municipal beach at Saint-Jorioz, charge in high season.
On the Léman side, the largest Alpine lake, the Chablais shores roll out family beaches that often fly the Pavillon Bleu flag: Excenevex and its fine sand, Sciez, Messery, Tougues or Saint-Disdille.
Higher up, the mountain lakes — Lac Blanc, Lac de Vallon, Lac Bénit, Lac des Confins — have to be earned on foot. Swimming is often tolerated but not supervised, and the water stays cold even at the height of summer.
The swimming season runs from June to September, with lifeguards on the main beaches in July and August. Each listing shows access, price and commune, plus a link to the official site where one exists.
